No More Waiting by the Mailbox for a Movie

Are you tired of waiting by the mailbox to get your next flick? No more vending machines to get your next DVD. Blockbuster Movie Pass by DISH Network is the perfect solution to your next movie night with the family.

Dish Network, which bought the bankrupt video rental giant in April for $320 million, announced Friday it would be launching the “Blockbuster Movie Pass,” a bundle of services that includes streaming video; DVDs, Blu-Rays and video games by mail; and access to premium movie channels.

According to CNN, the new offer is designed to compete with Netflix’s instant video content and its newly named Qwikster DVD-by-mail service. When Netflix split the two, the company effectively increased prices to $16 for both options.

The Blockbuster Movie Pass, available starting October 1, will cost $10 a month for all three options of on demand, instant streaming and movies/games by mail. Altogether, Blockbuster Movie Pass will give customers access to 100,000 titles by mail and 4,000 online.

“More Americans are demanding an easier way to view their video,” said Dish CEO Joe Clayton. “There is an easier way to have it.”

CNET points out that there’s a catch to the new offering: You need to be a Dish Network customer. The Blockbuster Movie Pass is $10 per month for existing Dish subscribers, but new customers who sign up for Dish’s America’s Top 200 package for $39.99 a month will get Blockbuster Movie Pass free for a year.

However, customers who are upset with Netflix’s recent price changes and CEO Reed Hastings’ public apology may still gladly welcome the new service.

The Blockbuster Movie Pass streaming catalog includes shows from Starz, Epix, Sony Movie Channel, and Encore, as well as Dish’s on demand library of Fox, TBS, TNT, Discovery, AMC, DIY, HGTV, Food and History programming. A more specific list of content was not immediately available.

One advantage of Blockbuster’s service is that customers who rent movies by mail can return them to store locations (though there are much fewer physical stores since 2008) to get the next DVD in their queue without waiting for the returned disc to be received in the mail. Unlike Blockbuster’s previous DVD-by-mail option, though, users won’t get an additional free in-store rental anymore.

CNN also pointed out that Blockbuster will have similar challenges that Netflix faces in obtaining access to the most popular, recently released movies and TV shows. Its pay-per-rental catalog features recent releases like “X-Men: First Class” and “Bridesmaids” priced at $3.99 for 24-hour viewing rights, but those same titles aren’t likely to show up in its all-you-can-watch unlimited streaming offering.

I also hate Netflix - their choices are so damn boring. It was a great idea for a while but …
